
Zippy Kimundu (she/her) is an award-winning Kenyan filmmaker with nearly two decades of experience in the global film industry spanning more than 20 countries. Her work foregrounds African women with agency as they navigate culture, identity, and the legacies of colonial histories.
Her feature documentary Widow Champion (2025) screened at festivals including Hot Docs and Tribeca, and her previous feature Our Land, Our Freedom (2023) screened at IDFA and Sheffield. Among numerous short films, she co-directed A Fork, a Spoon & a Knight; Burnt Forest; and Mercy, part of the Think Twice Movement; she was also assistant editor on Disney’s Queen of Katwe.
Zippy is a Chicken & Egg Awardee and a Sundance, JustFilms, and Logan Elevate fellow, and has collaborated with organizations including the BBC, Universal Studios, the United Nations, and the World Bank. She holds an MFA from New York University and is the founder of Afrofilms International, a creative collective dedicated to sparking socio-political awareness and action across continents.
